"Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. Christians feel and experience pain as do all other people; yet their faith helps them to grasp more deeply the mystery of suffering and to bear their pain with greater courage. From Christ's words they know that sickness has meaning and value for their own salvation and for the salvation of the world. They also know that Christ, who during his life often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness." [Pastoral Care of the Sick, No. 1]
The sacrament of anointing of the sick is not intended only for those who are at the point of death. As soon as anyone begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the time to receive the sacrament has arrived. [CCC, No. 1514] Through the sacrament, the church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. [CCC, No. 1499]
Individual celebrations of the sacrament in the home, hospital, or nursing facility may be scheduled by calling the parish office.
The sacrament of anointing of the sick is usually celebrated following the 4:30 pm Mass on the first Saturday of the month.
The sacrament should be celebrated when the serious illness occurs; please do not wait until death is imminent before requesting the sacrament.
